Super Rugby: Play-offs previewed

The 2013 Vodacom Super Rugby season is fast drawing to an end. We are heading into the play-offs this weekend and the winners will face either the Chiefs, the reigning champions, or the Bulls in the semi finals. What makes it interesting is that until the final result on Sunday morning not one of the teams will know who they will be facing. The team placed lowest on the overall log will face the Chiefs and the highest placed team the Bulls.

Crusaders v Reds. Saturday 20 July. Kick-off 9:35 SA Time.

This game is probably the easier one of the two play-offs to predict. Then it is a play-off game and anything can happen. It is however a brave man that will bet against the Crusaders winning this one. They have been on the up since the June Test break. It looks like they are peaking at the right time.

The Reds have been up and down the whole season but will bring their A-game on Saturday. Still they will struggle to beat a Crusaders team that looks like the team to beat from here on in.

Prediction: Crusaders by 14 or more.

Brumbies v Cheetahs. Sunday 21 July. Kick-off 8:10 SA Time.

The Brumbies finished top of the Australian conference, but they suffered a loss in the last round. Confidence and winning culture is what you need when heading into a play-off situation. They do have home ground advantage, but we saw last year that the Shraks went to the final playing the play-offs and semi’s away from home. Still the Brumbies won’t be an easy team to beat.

The Cheetahs comes into this game from a good win against the Blues. They have travelled well this season, specially in Australia and New Zealand. Last year they had a good run in Australia as well. They are confident and hungry to go to the semi’s. It will be hard for them being placed 6th and probably having to travel extensively over the next 3 weeks, but their hunger might be the key.

Prediction: Brumbies by a small margin only because they’re playing at home.
