How does Meyer compare after 15 tests

On Sport24 it has been reported that Springbok Coach Heyneke Meyer has already eclipsed the winning ratio of Peter de Villiers, his predecessor, and is set to overtake Jake White during the Castle Rugby Championship. They however took into account the records of the previous two coaches in total. Is this fair? I say not.

Let’s look at Meyer’s record of 15 tests compared to other coaches that was in charge of the Springboks for 15 tests. This will put his record in a better light compared to the others.

Information reflected as: Date of game, Competition, Home Team, PTS, Tries, PTS, Tries, Away Team.

Meyer has had 15 tests as follows:

If we look at the opponents it becomes even clearer as to the extended that we must read into these stats. And that is also why it is important to look at the records over a full career.

I do believe that Heyneke Meyer can become one of the all-time great Springbok coaches, but one must look at the facts and not just start judging his performance on his 15 games. He still has a long way to go before the 2015 World Cup and only once his contract has expired will we beable to really compare him to the other coaches.

The opposition his team plays against as well as the make of his side makes a big difference. That he has accomplished this much already with a relative young side is an achievement in itself.

But as always this is just my view.

About Dave

I totally love sport. Rugby, cricket and soccer, but my first love will always be rugby. Other than sport I write my own poems and other interestings articles. I also love cooking. A man of many talents. When it come to Cricket I'm a Cape Cobras, Kolkata Knight Riders and Proteas supporter. Soccer there is only one team and that is Man United and Germany internationally. Other than that I'm a loving father and husband.
