Arno Botha will be out for the rest of the season after rapturing ligaments in his knee on Saturday.

Botha sustained the injury inside the first 5 minutes of the test against Scotland in Nelspruit, only his second test. He was taken for scans and it revealed he ruptured his medial collateral and anterior cruciate ligaments. He will undergo surgery to correct it.

Coach Heyneke Meyer said it was a bog blow losing Botha so early in the match.

“Luckily he is still very young and I’m sure with the correct medical treatment and rehabilitation we will see him back on the field again in 2014.”

He also indicated that a replacement will be named at a later stage.

“We do have good cover at loose forward – Siya Kolisi, Marcell Coetzee and Pieter Labuschagne are all capable replacements. Furthermore Francois Louw is back tomorrow and Willem Alberts has responded well to treatment and will probably in the frame for selection this week,” said Meyer.

Siya Kolisi who replaced Botha during the test, came on to the field for the Stormers in 2012 under the same circumstances when Schalk Burger injured his knee. That was also in the opening minutes af the game.
